Flipped mastery model:
The main theme of mastery model is to allow students to
learn at their own pace. All students don’t need to learn similar topic at same
time they rather work toward a predetermined objective. Mastery learning is
suitable to the course where mastery of one objective is necessary for the
overall success of all subsequent objectives. In this mastery model Students
work either in small groups or individually at an appropriate pace. The teacher
formatively assesses students and gauges student understanding. Students
demonstrate mastery of objectives on summative assessments. For students who do
not master a given objective, remediation is provided. Many researches
regarding mastery model show improvement in student’s achievement, it increases
cooperation among students.
Basic concept of a flipped class is to flipped the work, the
work which is traditionally done in class is now done at home, and that which
is traditionally done as homework is now completed in class. Content has been
delivered through video or any other multimedia, they work upon that idea
themselves on the first day and later they work on their confusion with their mentor/teacher.
A flipped-mastery classroom takes the principles of mastery
learning and tie them with modern technology to make a sustainable,
reproducible, and manageable environment for learning. In the beginning of
class teacher helps to organize the task of students. Teacher checks what a
student or group of students want to do. Teacher talks to each of the student
of class room each day and discuss what are they doing. If they need any help
regarding their project teacher needs to explain the things in few
minutes. If student want to demonstrate
his/her work class come up together, they learn and have post demonstration
discussion. If students struggle with any objective teacher works with them
using SMART board, whiteboard, or in a round table discussion. If a student
struggles to demonstrate mastery of any objectives on the summative
assessments, teacher review his past attempts of the assessment with him and
provide him with individualized remediation to ensure his future success.
A teacher should have following qualities to effectively
perform on Flipped-mastery model:
· Teacher should be proficient in his content area.
· The teacher must be able to admit when he or she does not know the answer to student questions and must be willing to research an answer with the student.
· The teacher must be able to flow through a class period in a nonlinear fashion.
·
Teacher should be clam during learning process.
First of all, teacher need to determine
clear objective. Teacher can use national frameworks, local and national
curriculum and professional judgment to determine what student should able to
do.
Then determine which of these objectives
are best achieved through inquiry, and which are best learned through direct
instruction. Create a video for those objectives that will benefit from direct
instruction. Teacher can use someone else videos for those objectives which can
be achieved through inquiry.
Incorporate engaging learning activities to
be done in class.
Create multiple versions of each summative
assessment (Assessment that evaluate student learning at
the end of a unit) for students to demonstrate their mastery of each
learning objective in a particular unit of study.
